Chapter Five
THE COMPANY
OF BELIEVERS
ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS PEOPLE donât follow God is that doing so often means turning away from their family or peers. This was Lucyâs dilemma. Even though she could see Aslan and the others couldnât, she could hardly stand the thought of leaving her companions and following the Lion into the wilderness alone.
Itâs surprising how hostile family and friends can be to the idea of following God. For whatever reasons, those entrenched in the values of the culture often seem to do all they can to make it hard on the person who wants to try the way of Christ.
I think this hostility stems mostly from a sense buried deep inside that by following Christ, you are doing the right thing. They, however, lack the courage to leave what theyâve been raised to believe. Your choice seems to judge them and put them in the wrong even though that is not your intention.
They judge themselves because the real truth has been implanted deep in everyoneâs heart. Itâs part of our original standard equipment. Everyone has within an innate sense that there is a supreme being and a true standard of right. We must be conditioned or educated into disbelief. Most often, disbelief is simply absorbed from those around usâfamily, schoolteachers and classmates, friends, coworkers. . . Itâs hard to take God seriously when those youâre close to donât. Itâs not easy to go it alone. But if you find the path youâre looking for, itâs worth all the rejection or ridicule you might feel.
The good news, however, is that you donât have to go it alone. Affirmation, help, companionship, and support for your decision are readily available.
